April Update - Tuesday 11th April 2017
It's been very quiet for a long time but we're back with some big news! The Whybirds will be playing three 'Final Show' gigs in the coming months. These will be the last gigs for the foreseeable future, so it would be great to see you at one of them. The dates are:
30 June - Esquires, Bedford
7 July - Portland Arms, Cambridge
11 August - Radicals and Victuallers, London
See you soon!
November Update - Friday 14th November 2014
We’ve got our big London show to tell you about this month. It’s on Saturday 29th November at The Enterprise in Camden.
Were putting on this show entirely ourselves, missing out many of the greedy promoters that operate in the capital. It’s more of a risk for us, but at least it means we’re doing things on our own terms.
We’ve also got some great support coming from The Darling Mundaring and Tequilla Mockingbird, so it’ll be a good and varied night. Please get your tickets in advance from the store now! At £6 (with no additional postage charge for multiple items) they’ll be cheaper than they will be on the door.
In other news, we’ll be hitting The White Hart at Melton Mowbray on Sunday 7 December.
Hope to see you at the gigs!
October Update - Thursday 16th October 2014
Just to keep you in the loop about our upcoming gigs.
Firstly, we’re headlining Bedford Esquires’ Main Stage on Saturday 18th October as part of Oxjam. Go here to buy tickets.
Then of course, we have our big London show, which is our first in the capital since 2012. It’s on Saturday 29th November at The Enterprise in Camden. Now, in order to avoid greedy London promoters taking more than we think is fair, we’ve decided to book our own show, which is more of a risk for us, but we’ve had enough of the pay-to-play culture in the capital.
So we’d really appreciate it if you got advance tickets from our store. At £6 a ticket, they’re £2 cheaper than the door cost anyway, plus if you buy in bulk you’ll save a lot in postage too as there is no extra charge for multiple tickets.
We’ve arranged for Tequilla Mockingbird and The Darling Mundaring to support us too, so it should be a great night.
Finally, we’re heading back up to the Midlands for a free show at The White Hart, Melton Mowbray, on Sunday 7 December.
We hope to see you at one of the gigs!
September Update - Thursday 4th September 2014
We're playing Club 85 in Hitchin tomorrow night (5 September), sharing the bill with other Bedfordshire bands Tequila Mockingbird, Pirate Radio and Speedshot.
Though we're only doing a 30-minute set, it's going to be a great night and four bands for a fiver can't be bad! Hope to see you there. We'll keep you posted on forthcoming gigs, but Londoners, keep the 29th November free!
Luke Tuchscherer & The Penny Dreadfuls will also be playing Bedford at the Ent Shed on Friday 26th September, with support from Christian Webb. Tickets are available here.
August Update - Thursday 7th August 2014
We’re playing The Portland Arms in Cambridge this Saturday 9th August. It’s our first gig since May, so we’re really looking forward to it.
Luke and Dave were interviewed by Slate the Disco about the gig, which you can read here. We hope you can make it down. Tickets are available here.
Then we’ll be playing at Club 85 in Hitchin on Friday 5th September.
We hope you’re all well, and that we’ll see you at one of the shows!
July Update - Monday 14th July 2014
We hope you’re all enjoying your summer.
Just a quick reminder to let you know about the band’s headline gig at The Portland Arms in Cambridge on Saturday 9 August. Support comes from the brilliant Winter and tickets are available here.
Then on Friday 5 September, the ‘birds will be returning to Club 85 in Hitchin, Hertfordshire to play with Tequila Mockingbird.
In the meantime, you can now order advance copies of Luke’s solo album (the record’s official release is 6 October) from here.
We hope you’re all well, see you soon! The Whybirds
June Update - Friday 6th June 2014
Not too much to report in the way of Whybirds activities this month, however, Luke is launching his solo record at Holy Moly’s, Bedford Esquires on Saturday 14th June.
Both Ben and Dave will be making guest appearances during the show, and support comes from singer/songwriter Joff Lincoln.
It’s £5 entry, and if you’re worried about missing England Vs Italy, they’ll be showing the match in the bar after the gig.
The band will be playing The Portland Arms in Cambridge on 9th August and tickets are available here. Stick it in the diaries!
That’s all for now, we’ll keep you posted on further Whybirds news as and when!
May Update - Tuesday 29th April 2014
We hope you’re all doing well!
We’ve got two gigs to play this month. The first is on Friday 2 May at the George & Dragon in Belper, Derbyshire.
Then, we’re back at Bedford Esquires on Saturday 24 May, where we’ll be supported by The Simpletone and Silver Tongue Bandoliers.
We hope to see you at one of the gigs!
Finally, Luke’s Pledge campaign for his solo album finishes on Sunday 4 May, so if you wanted to pre-order the record (which won’t go on general sale until 6 October), then head on over to this link now.
That’s all folks!
April Update - Tuesday 8th April 2014
Not a lot to report this month, but Ben’s arm is all fixed up and the band is heading back to the rehearsal studio to work on new material. It’s an exciting time because the new stuff has the potential to turn out pretty nicely.
In the meantime, you can download (for free!) some full shows from our recent Spanish tour, as recorded by our friend Humbug. You can get hold of the Madrid show here and the Valencia show here.
However, we do have a couple of gigs in the diary for next month, the first being Friday 2 May at The George & Dragon in Belper, Derbyshire and the next at Bedford Esquires on Saturday 24 May.
Lastly, Luke’s Pledge campaign for his solo record has hit its target, but you can still pre-order the album until the end of April. This will be your last chance until the album comes out properly in October.
As he’s reached his target, HALF of all money raised from now on will go to Macmillan Cancer Support. You can read about the work Macmillan does here.
This means that you can get a CD for £10 and £5 will go to Macmillan, or get a signed CD and a t-shirt for £25, and £12.50 will go to… you get the drift.
So if you’re feeling charitable and want to get hold of Luke’s solo album months before the general release, then visit here.
See you soon! The Whybirds
March Update - Friday 7th March 2014
Hello! The first bit of news is that unfortunately Ben was hurt in a bicycle accident, and while he’s on the mend, it means he will not be able to play the show at Club 85 in Hitchin on Saturday 8th March. Dave and Luke will open the show at 8pm as an acoustic duo instead.
Then, there’s some news from Luke regarding a new Pledge Music campaign for his solo album:
He says: "I’ve finally done it! I’ve launched the Pledge campaign for my solo record, You Get So Alone At Times That it Just Makes Sense. I’m at 45% already, which is mindblowing, but I’ve still got a long way to go. “I made the record with Tom Peters, who produced The Whybirds’ Cold Blue Sky and mixed our last record, A Little Blood. As the ’birds have gone more rock now, this album reflects more of my country side – think songs like Morva, Foolish Heart or If You Stay With Me from the Whybirds catalogue.
"The album has already been mixed and mastered, the artwork is ready to go, I just need a little help with the printing costs. To Pledge on the album (and I’ll love you forever if you do), just go to Pledge Music.
"A bit more about the album: Both Dave and Ben from the band play on it, as well as other guests including Max Hart (We Are Scientists, Katy Perry), Nick Mailing (The Quireboys), Chris Corney (The Quireboys), Simon Rinaldo (Pearl Handled Revolver), with string arrangements by Johnny Parry."
- If I don’t make my target, none of it goes ahead.
- Every exclusive comes with a free download of the album
- Once/if I’ve made my target, HALF of what I make afterwards will go to Macmillan
February Update - Friday 28th February 2014
We're back from our first ever headline tour of Spain, and it was absolutely amazing.
Thanks to everyone who attended the shows, and all the crew and promoters for making everything run so smoothly for us. Graçias!
If you check out our Facebook page you can see photos and videos from the gigs, as well as setlists for every night of the tour.
Our next UK show will be at Club 85 in Hitchin on Saturday 8th March. It'd be great to see some people there!
January Update - Thursday 9th January 2014
Happy New Year!
We hope you all had a nice festive break and are ready for 2014.
Just a quick note to wish you all well, and to let you know that we've booked up a few shows:
Saturday 8 March at Club 85, Hitchin, Herts
Friday 2 May at George & Dragon, Belper, Derbyshire
Saturday 24 May at Esquires, Bedford
Of course, all those shows occur after the Spanish tour in February (see gigs page for details). We'll keep you posted as and when new gigs are confirmed.
The kind folks at Songwriting Magazine named "The Cure" one of their Best Rock Songs of 2013 and listed the band in their Most Overlooked Artists category as well.
Classic Rock magazine had some kind words for the new album too, saying:
"Darker, meaner, stripped back. The band's songwriting still shines through the fuzz, though, songs like 'Never Let You Go' and 'More Than He Could Stand' are brittle but beautiful. Their heads may be hung low, but their songs still resonate."
Other than that, thank you for your continued support. Don't forget to head over to the store if you haven't yet got your copy of A Little Blood.
Hope to see you on the road soon!
